Padakonn Pharma is pleased to share a new scientific publication examining the kidney–brain axis in renal failure. The study, “Kidney-Brain Axis: In Renal Failure, Cardiotonic Steroids Stimulate Collagen-I in the Hypothalamus and Claudins 1 and 7 in the Choroid Plexus”, was published online by Bentham Science in Current Neuropharmacology on 17 September 2026.
The research examined whether elevated marinobufagenin (MBG), a cardiotonic steroid, is associated with collagen-I production in the hypothalamus and changes in claudin-1 and claudin-7 in the choroid plexus. In rats with experimental renal failure, the researchers observed changes in these brain tissues and in Na/K-ATPase activity. Anti-MBG antibody treatment prevented the reported changes in the animal model. The study also compared a blood marker of collagen production in 12 people receiving hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease with six healthy controls; it did not test antibody treatment in patients.
Current Neuropharmacology is an international peer-reviewed journal covering molecular, cellular and systems aspects of neuropharmacology and neuroscience. The publisher lists a current impact factor of 6.1 and a five-year impact factor of 7.7 for the journal. The paper is available online ahead of print and has DOI 10.2174/011570159X514186260909055112.
For Padakonn Pharma, the findings broaden the biological picture of MBG beyond its established cardiovascular and kidney-related research. They do not establish a neurological treatment. They provide a reason to keep studying how a circulating molecule may connect kidney disease with changes in other tissues.
